Senior Researcher, Multidisciplinary Border Studies

FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND BUSINESS STUDIES
Senior Researcher in Multidisciplinary Border Studies , a shared position of the Karelian Institute and the Department of Social Sciences, Joensuu Campus.
The position is associated with the Cultural Encounters, Mobilities and Borders (CULTCHANGE) research area of the University of Eastern Finland. The role of the Senior Researcher is to develop and carry out interdisciplinary top-level research in UEFs CULTCHANGE research area, one of the university's five strategic top-level international research areas seeking to find solutions to the complex challenges of our changing world. CULTCHANGE studies links between human security, social and cultural borders, and the ability of societies to demonstrate resilience and adaptability in the face of multilevel challenges to social cohesion and sense of belonging. The specific focus of this position will be in developing research strengths in relation to questions of social cohesion and ontological security . While Europe will be the primary focus, a broader comparative perspective is also welcome. As part of the CULTCHANGE community, the researcher will examine processes, impacts, and the consequences of socio-cultural bordering as well as investigate potentials for countering xenophobic and populistic tendencies.This position will strengthen the activities of the universitys strategic research areas. An ideal candidate is expected to have a research vision that clearly transcends traditional discipline boundaries and addresses viewpoints that combine various border-forming processes with significant social challenges. The applicant is to present this vision in a concise (max. 3 pages) research proposal and in a brief development plan which clarifies the applicant's contributions to the development of CULTCHANGE in terms of network building, project activities and knowledge transfer.The candidate will also have the opportunity to teach and supervise students (maximum 20% working time) in his or her area of expertise at the Department of Social Sciences.
The position is filled for a four-year term as from 1 January 2020. The position is filled for fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific funding programme.
In accordance with UEFs University Regulations (Section 31), persons to be appointed as Senior Researchers shall hold a suitable doctoral degree and have good teaching skills.
The Senior Reseacher is expected to have language skills that support the field's research. Good command of the English language is required.
The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on level 6 - 7 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff ( 3,423.25 3,946.50 / month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 50 % of the job requirement component.
A trial period is applied to all new members of the university's staff.
